
Muscular Diseases or Myopathies
Muscular diseases or myopathies are rare diseases where the interrelation between the different specialists (clinicians, pathologists, geneticists, etc.) is crucial for a correct diagnosis and appropriate follow-up and treatment of the patient. On some occasions, the diagnosis can be made with a simple physical examination of the patient, but complementary tests such as electromyogram, magnetic resonance imaging, measurement of muscle enzymes in the blood, muscle biopsy, forearm ischemia test, etc.
The symptoms and signs with which myopathies usually present are muscle weakness, exercise intolerance, massive muscle destruction (rhabdomyolysis), pain, atrophy, ramps, muscle contractures, etc.
Treatment of Muscle Diseases
Treatment is divided into muscle diseases or myopathies that can be cured (infectious myositis), those that can be treated and controlled ( idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, POMPE disease, etc.), and those for which only treatment can be provided. Supportive treatment through physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
