Treatments according to the type of Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic disease with no cure, except for gestational diabetes, which tends to disappear when the baby is born. Treatments have improved dramatically in recent years, and research continues to find prevention strategies and new therapies.

The treatment will depend on the type of diabetes you have, and this can be the administration of insulin or the taking of oral medications. In addition, it is essential to follow a healthy eating plan, maintain a healthy weight and be physically active.

It is essential to highlight the differences between the types of Diabetes and their treatments.

Diabetes type 1

People with type 1 diabetes mellitus should:

  • Inject insulin to live.
  • Perform glucose monitoring.
  • Follow a balanced eating plan.
  • Perform physical activity regularly.

Type 2 diabetes

Treatment may vary depending on the stage in which the disease was diagnosed and its evolution. Therefore, there will be people with type 2 diabetes mellitus with different treatment modalities:

  • Follow a healthy eating plan that helps control body weight and regular physical activity (more than 150 minutes a week) and oral medications.
  • New oral or injectable drugs will be added if the first treatment is not enough.
  • If the second treatment is not enough, perhaps insulin should be added to the treatment. The frequency of glucose monitoring will depend on the type of treatment.

Gestational Diabetes

Treatment is based on:

  • Follow a healthy eating plan.
  • Get regular physical activity.
  • Glucose monitoring before meals and one hour later.

If this treatment does not achieve the glucose control goals, insulin will be added since hypoglycemic drugs cannot be given during pregnancy.
