Cardiology

Heart failure is caused by the inability of the heart to adequately pump blood to the rest of the organs. As a consequence, tiredness, weakness or shortness of breath appear. It is the leading cause of hospitalization in the population over 65 years of age.

Treatment of heart failure

There is no curative treatment for heart failure. In any case, the control of the disease involves following the recommendations on diet, exercise and other habits, to alleviate the symptoms, reduce the progression of the disease and improve the quality of life, accompanied by pharmacological treatment.

Conservative treatment

Completely suppress tobacco or alcohol consumption , whatever the cause of heart failure.

If necessary, lose weight.

Maintain an active life and avoid a sedentary lifestyle. Physical exercise appropriate to the person’s capabilities and cardiac status should be practiced. The most frequent recommended activities are walking, swimming or cycling. It is important to avoid those exercises that involve great effort and avoid the hottest, humid or coldest hours of the day.

It is advisable to follow a balanced diet and suppress or avoid caffeine, as well as moderate the consumption of fats and salt because it causes fluid retention.

Sleep at least 7-8 hours. It is very important to rest.
